James Comey, the former director of the FBI, is being investigated by the Secret Service over a controversial social media post that allegedly suggested violence against Trump.
A contentious social media post that former FBI Director James Comey shared—and later removed—sparked charges from Republican circles that he was inciting violence against former President Donald Trump, prompting the US Secret Service to launch an inquiry into Comey.
An image of a seashell on a beach with the numbers “8647” scrawled on it was part of the since-deleted Instagram post. Comey wrote as the photo’s caption:
“Easy shell formation while strolling along the beach.”
Despite the post’s apparent innocence, the pairing of the numbers 86 and 47 caused a great deal of criticism. Merriam-Webster states that the word “86” is frequently used in American slang to indicate “to get rid of” or, with a darker sense, “to kill.” In the approaching 2024 election, Trump hopes to become the 47th President of the United States, which makes the number 47 crucial.
The “8647” code was perceived by critics, especially those in the Republican Party, as a call for Trump’s murder. They said that Comey was encouraging violence by publishing a coded message that could be read as “86 (kill) 47 (Trump).”
Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem made one of the loudest comments, accusing Comey of “calling for Trump’s murder.” But Comey quickly clarified his stance and denied any malice.
Following the removal of the post, Comey made the following statement:
I was unaware that some people connected such figures to acts of violence. I never even considered that. However, I chose to delete the post because I vehemently oppose violence in all its forms.
“We Take These Matters Seriously,” the Secret Service replies.
Anthony Guglielmi, a spokesperson for the Secret Service, responded to public outrage by posting the following statement on X (previously Twitter):
“Anything that might be viewed as posing a threat to the people we are entrusted with protecting is extensively investigated by us. We are taking this issue seriously and are aware of the social media post made by former FBI Director Comey. Ongoing security intelligence investigations, however, are not the subject of our public comments.
The Secret Service said that the post sparked enough worry to merit an investigation, even if it did not formally confirm whether Comey is being considered a danger.

Comey Removes Post and Provides Justification
Comey removed the tweet shortly after the commotion and openly admitted that the picture could be read differently than he had intended.
He explained:
“I now realize that the numbers and the shell were perceived as a political statement. I didn’t mean to do that. I recently discovered the shell, and I found the statistics intriguing. Nevertheless, I felt it was better to remove the post because I am against any types of violence.
Trump’s Circle Reacts Angrily
Trump’s supporters reacted quickly and fiercely. The eldest son of the former president, Donald Trump Jr., had a strong reaction to X:
“James Comey just demanded that my father be killed.”
This view was shared by former White House Deputy Chief of Staff Dan Scavino, who said Comey was quietly encouraging terrorists or bad actors to attack Trump during the former president’s Middle East tour.
Scavino penned:
Comey is urging terrorists and bad actors to kill the president while he is going abroad—Trump is currently abroad!
Kristi Noem, meantime, reiterated her previous statements, saying:
In essence, the former director of the FBI has demanded that Trump be killed. We will make certain that the Secret Service and the Department of Homeland Security conduct a comprehensive investigation into this issue.

The FBI Reacts as Well: Aware and Keeping an Eye on the Situation
In a social media post, Trump supporter and FBI official Kash Patel acknowledged that the Bureau was aware of Comey’s since-deleted remark. He promised complete cooperation if necessary and that the FBI was working with the Secret Service.
“We are aware of what former FBI Director James Comey posted on social media about President Trump. The FBI is prepared to offer any assistance that may be required, and the Secret Service has jurisdiction over this issue.
James Comey: Who Is He?
From 2013 to 2017, James Comey was the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) director. There was a lot of controversy during his tenure, particularly during the 2016 presidential election.
He famously oversaw the well-publicized probe of Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server, which many Democrats continue to hold responsible for her defeat by Donald Trump. While directing an investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election, Comey was abruptly fired in 2017, only months into Trump’s presidency. This decision drew national outrage and resulted in the establishment of Special Counsel Robert Mueller.
Comey has continued to be an outspoken opponent of Donald Trump after leaving public office, producing books and occasionally offering commentary on current events. Even after he left the government, his public behavior may come under closer scrutiny as a result of this most recent scandal.

Does Violence Have a Pattern?
According to public sources, Trump has escaped two assassination attempts in the past year alone, and the accusations against Comey come amid a hostile political environment. Because of these incidents, security services are now more alert than ever to potential direct or indirect threats against the former president.
In light of this, any inadvertent intimation of violence against Trump is being treated with extreme gravity.
The Overarching View: Digital Symbolism and Political Division
This incident serves as a reminder of the United States’ increasingly divisive and poisonous political climate. Depending on the perspective of the observer, even an apparently innocuous post about a shell could be construed as a political statement.
Concern over “dog-whistling,” or the use of coded language or numbers to convey subliminal signals, is rising on both political sides. Such messages, whether deliberate or not, have the power to elicit intense emotional responses, particularly when they feature well-known people like a past president.
What Takes Place Next?
Whether Comey faces legal repercussions or if the inquiry concludes that the post was a misinterpreted coincidence is still up in the air. There is currently no proof that Comey made any overt threats or intended harm.
However, given the digital age, when every picture and caption can be analyzed for a deeper meaning, the issue highlights how brittle and perilous the present political discourse has become.
This episode is expected to exacerbate the already simmering antagonism between Trump supporters and his detractors as the 2024 election cycle heats up.
Law enforcement organizations are nonetheless on high alert in the interim, and public figures—particularly former officials—are being warned that even small comments and deeds can have serious repercussions.
